Outlander

Outlander Season 1 Volume 2 has just been added to our collection. Outlander is based on the best selling series by Diana Gabaldon and stars Caitrona Balfe, Sam Heughan, and Graham McTavish (The Hobbit trilogy).

The story follows Claire Randall, a married combat nurse during WWII. Claire is somehow transported through time to 1743 Scotland where being English isn’t a good thing. She is forced to marry Jamie Frasier to save herself and falls helplessly in love with the young clansman. Claire has to deal with being in love with two men, being imprisoned by the English, avoid being burned as a witch, and so much more. As the series continues, we move to France, the Caribbean, and Colonial America.

This tale of love is based in the beautiful hills of Scotland. Anyone interested in historical fiction, Scotland, romance, or the Clans will find this series immensely enjoyable.

Cinderella

Cinderella 1-Disc DVDHave you seen the new Disney movie Cinderella? It is a fantastic live action retelling of the classic fairy tale. Ella has the perfect life until her mother dies and her father remarries. But life gets even worse when her father dies too. Ella is left living with a cruel stepmother and 2 stepsisters. When she meets a handsome stranger life begins to get more interesting. Throw in a fairy godmother, glass slippers, some magic, and a prince and the story is complete.

The movie stars Lily James, Richard Madden, Helena Bonham Carter, and Cate Blanchett. Each of their characters are fully developed and were superbly cast. The DVD will be available on Tuesday, September 15th! I highly recommend you watch it. And remember to “have courage and always be kind.”

Fantastic Movies at the Library

We have a fantastic collection of DVD’s available for checkout. Our collection is always growing. Today I will be adding Poldark Season 1, Wolf Hall, Sharknado, Awesome Animal Builders, Dinosaurs and other Creature Features to name just a few.

Poldark and Wolf Hall are both BBC series shown on PBS. Poldark is based on the historical fiction series by Winston Graham; it stars Aidan Turner from The Hobbit trilogy as Ross Poldark. Wolf Hall is also historical fiction based on Hilary Mantel’s novels Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies. Wolf Hall has Damian Lewis from Homeland portraying King Henry VIII. Sharknado, starring Ian Ziering and Tara Reid, is a SyFy movie about sharks swept up in a hurricane that terrorize the people of LA.

Awesome Animal Builders, Dinosaurs and other Creature Features are all juvenile movies. They were all produced by National Geographic and are therefore all factual with real video footage of animals, except for the dinosaurs which are computer animated.

If you haven’t been in to check out a movie lately, today is a great day to do so!

The Woman in Gold

The Woman in Gold is the remarkable true story of a woman trying to seek justice and recover her family’s heritage. 60 years after fleeing Nazi controlled Vienna, Maria Altmann attempts to recover several family paintings, including a painting of her aunt, stolen by the Nazi’s. All of the paintings were done by Klimt, a famous Austrian artist and kept in the Belvedere Gallery. Her journey is long and arduous but ultimately she is able to get satisfaction.

This movie is essentially about doing what is right and fixing the wrongs of the past. Some people and even some countries find that very difficult to accomplish when it comes to the atrocities committed during WWII. This story is representative of thousands of others that suffered and have since fought for retribution, to get their heritage and their belongings back.

Helen Mirren portrays Maria beautifully, you can feel the anger and hurt over what her family suffered. Ryan Reynolds plays her youthful and inexperienced lawyer, Randy Schoenberg, with Katie Holmes as his wife.

I think that this was a wonderful story with great lead actors that could have benefited from some editing. Some scenes dragged on while others I would have enjoyed delving into further. However, I still highly recommend this movie.

In the course of the four seasons the nurses, midwives and nuns of Nonnatus House have become old friends – Nurse Trixie, Sister Evangelina and Sister Julienne and all of the other heart-warming characters.

If you have missed this excellent series, check out Season One. It is a lovely series about birth and life, set in one of the poorer sections of London in the 1950’s. The series is based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth. If your interested in reading the story we do own the book as well!
